The daily grind Vietnamese style; hectic, pack, hustle and bustle, vibrant, tradition and all the real daily Hanoians livelihood. Walk around, enjoy and absorb the scenery, stop for coffee, food, interact and relax. Authentic Vietnam experience.
This area of town has interesting local color. The area closest to the lake is not as good as the streets deeper in, because of the somewhat agressive salespeople. Different street segments specialize in different goods, clothing, shoes, toys, art supplies, temple worship goods, and metalwork are just some of the examples. It is a pretty good place to buy things too. If you run across someone crouched on the sidewalk grilling delicious smelling meat, cut loose and buy some. I have not regreted my meat purchases, not really sure what I ate but it was awesome.
Walking around the old quarter was crazy with scooters going everywhere and food made on the streets. All sorts of goods to buy were everywhere. It was exhilarating and a true flavor of Hanoi.
Loved the street food, the sights, the location for visiting other historical sites. On the other hand, it was pleasant to get to areas with a little more space. The Old Quarter is old.
The Old Quarter is a series of tight little streets winding all over the place, until you have no idea where you are. A multitude of shops, restaurants and street food vendors make for a fun day (or night) of exploring. The area is safe as far as crime, and my only caution would be to really watch for traffic. The sidewalks are mostly used for scooter parking, so pedestrians are forced to walk in the street. The night market is held on the weekends, and you should try to catch that too. Dozens of streets blocked off to vehicle traffic.
We spent a day and two nights in Hanoi and we loved every minute. It feels more like a holiday resort than a capital city. You just have to fully emerge yourself in it. Cross the road with confidence and view it as a challenge. Drink beer on the little plastic stools at the road side for 20p a glass. Eat new things that you never thought you’d ever try….live the life and feel the city. I can’t wait to come back

Located in the middle of Ha Noi, a rapidly developing city where changes take place every hour, Ha Noi Old Quarter with its old-styled narrow streets full of antique brick houses seems to nostalgically resist the flow of time while still actively trying to adapt to the dynamic atmosphere of the modern city. Once a bustling area where merchants and artisans gathered to sell their products, Ha Noi Old Quarter consists of many small, meandering streets, each bears the name of the goods that was specifically traded there such as Hang Bac (Silver Product), Hang Ma (Paper Product), Hang Go (Wood Product), just to name a few...
